Engelszell Abbey, Austria's only Trappist monastery, was founded in 1293 and has a very eventful history behind it. The Abbey formed its brewery in 2012 and became the eigth brewery to join the ranks of Trappist breweries. The Abbey use barley and wheat malts from Austria and the specialty malts from Bavaria. The hops come from the neighboring Mühlviertel, which is the largest hop-growing area in Austria. Belgian ale yeast produced in Austria is used to ferment all Engelszeller beers.
